Modern Prosper and Celina builds in Star Trail and Windsong Ranch are putting in glass at a scale the older Dallas suburbs never tried. Floor-to-ceiling walls, sliding panels twelve feet tall, corner openings that slide fully into wall pockets. The architecture is beautiful and it is also a serious thermal and UV problem during a north Texas summer. We design Lutron motorized shade systems for these openings — large fabrication, dual-layer where the room needs blackout, sun-defense scheduling tied to the actual angle of the August sun on the specific facade.
The discipline at this scale is engineering, not decoration. A twelve-foot tall sliding door wants a different roller, motor torque class, and headbox geometry than a five-foot bedroom window. Our Star Trail great room has twelve-foot tall sliding glass. Can shades even cover that opening?
Yes. Lutron fabricates large-format rollers well beyond the residential standard, and we have installed them on openings up to fourteen feet in north Dallas modern builds. The motor torque class is specified for the load and the headbox recesses into the ceiling for a clean line.
The primary suite floor is already fading from UV. Will shades stop it?
They will if specified correctly. A sun-defense layer with the right openness factor blocks 95-plus percent of UV while keeping the view usable during the day. The fading stops. The room stays open.
We are still in framing in Windsong Ranch. Can we plan headbox recesses now?
Yes, and you should. Recessing the headboxes during framing is a clean architectural detail that costs almost nothing at this stage. Adding them after drywall is a surface-mount that always reads as something added on.
Will the motors be loud in the great room?
No. The Lutron motor class we specify for large-format Prosper great rooms runs quieter than the HVAC. From across the room, you hear the fabric moving and almost nothing else.
