The Quiet Heart of a Connected Home

Every piece of technology in a connected DFW home routes through the network rack — Savant hosts, Savant processors, enterprise-grade switches, NVR security recorders, audio amplifiers, cable boxes, ISP equipment. A poorly built rack becomes a tangle that traps heat, hides cable labels, and produces failures no one can quite diagnose. A properly built rack organizes equipment for airflow, labels every connection so a stranger could trace it, and delivers clean power with surge protection and battery backup.

We design racks as engineered systems. Enclosure, shelf layout, ventilation, power distribution, cable management — all chosen for your equipment list and the room conditions. Whether the rack lives in a dedicated server closet, a climate-controlled utility room, or a Southlake garage wall, we build it to run reliably through the August afternoon when the attic above hits a hundred and forty.

Specification and Layout

We start with an inventory. Every component that will live in the rack or hang off it. A typical DFW luxury smart home rack carries: Savant host, enterprise-grade switch (24 or 48-port PoE+), ISP modem or ONT, firewall, NVR, Steinway Lyngdorf or Savant amplifiers, HDBaseT or IP video matrix, Savant processor, cable or satellite receiver, UPS battery backup. We map all of it to rack units and produce a layout drawing showing exactly where everything sits.

Placement follows two rules — heat and access. Amplifiers and PoE switches mount toward the top, where rising warm air exits through fans. Processors and controllers that need occasional hands-on attention live at eye level. Patch panels and cable management slip in between, keeping cables organized and the back of the rack readable. Two to four rack units stay open for the next five years of additions.

Ventilation and Thermal Management

Heat is what kills electronics. A fully loaded 42U rack puts off 1,500 to 3,000 BTU an hour — enough to take a small closet to dangerous temperatures without active ventilation. For closet installs, we use AC Infinity or Middle Atlantic fan systems that exhaust warm air into the attic or return plenum and pull conditioned air in through a vented door or wall grille. Temperature sensors trim fan speed and send an alert if the closet ever climbs above eighty-five.

For garage-mounted racks in DFW — where ambient touches a hundred and ten in the worst weeks — we specify a dedicated mini-split for the rack area or a sealed, insulated rack with integrated cooling. The cost of a mini-split is small next to the cost of replacing a four-thousand-dollar Savant host that gave up after a hundred-and-thirty-degree afternoon. Every rack we install reports its temperature back to your dashboard.

Power Protection and Cable Management

Power protection starts with a Furman or SurgeX power conditioner that filters AC noise and clamps surge voltages. DFW thunderstorms run from March through October, and a single lightning-induced surge on the line can take out thousands of dollars of electronics in a moment. Behind the surge protector, a CyberPower or APC UPS gives the rack fifteen to thirty minutes of battery — enough to ride through a brief outage, enough to shut down gracefully through a long one.

Cable management is where craft meets engineering. Panduit or Middle Atlantic horizontal cable managers between every two rack units. Service loops at the rear. Every cable receives a machine-printed label at both ends matching the patch panel port and the documented floor plan location. Color-coded — blue for network data, green for PoE cameras, white for audio, yellow for video. The finished rack is clean enough to photograph for the portfolio. And functional enough that any technician can service it without picking up the phone.

Where should the network rack be located?

A dedicated, air-conditioned closet near the center of the home is ideal — short cable runs, good cooling. If no dedicated space exists, a utility room, climate-controlled garage, or under-stair space works well with proper ventilation. We avoid attics in DFW because of summer temperatures, and we keep racks off exterior walls because of moisture.

How large of a rack do I need?

Most DFW luxury homes want a 22U to 36U rack. Homes with extensive audio and video distribution, a large camera system, or multiple automation platforms may want a full 42U or a second rack. We size from your equipment inventory plus the expansion space.

What happens during a power outage?

The UPS carries critical network and automation equipment for fifteen to thirty minutes. Through that window, the home keeps running normally. If power does not return, the system shuts itself down gracefully to protect equipment and data. When power comes back, everything boots in the right order, on its own.

Can I access the rack remotely?

Yes. We install remote management tools so our team — and you — can watch rack temperature, UPS status, switch port activity, and AP health from anywhere. Many issues get diagnosed and resolved without a truck rolling to your property.

How do you handle future equipment additions?

Two to four rack units stay reserved. Spare power outlets sit on the PDU. Cable pathways have pull strings, and patch panels have spare ports already terminated. When a new system arrives — a second NVR for more cameras, a new music server — it slots in without anyone tearing apart the rack to make room.
