Why Most Surge Protection Wears Out

The surge protector on the back of the average AV rack uses metal-oxide varistors — components designed to divert a voltage surge to ground when the line spikes. Two problems. First, varistors degrade with every surge they absorb. After enough events, they fail silently — the indicator light still glows green while the protection is gone. Second, the diverted surge has to go somewhere. It piles into the ground line, where it can travel back into the equipment through ground references and damage exactly what the protector was supposed to save.

SurgeX engineered around both problems with a patented Advanced Series Mode design that eliminates surges instead of diverting them. The technology comes out of the same broadcast and hospital installations where catastrophic equipment failure is simply not an option. It does not wear out. It does not pollute the ground. And it never lets a surge reach the equipment.

How Advanced Series Mode Works

A SurgeX unit places its protection components in series with the AC line, not in parallel. When a surge event arrives — a lightning strike on the local utility line, a transformer fault down the street, a switching event on the grid — the SurgeX unit absorbs the surge energy inductively and dissipates it as low-level heat across its lifetime, never reaching the equipment downstream and never degrading the protection circuit. The same unit protects equally well at year one and year twenty.

The result is the only surge protection in the residential AV industry that carries a lifetime equipment protection guarantee — SurgeX will replace any equipment damaged by a surge event that passes through their protection. The SurgeX Line We Specify, and the Install

The SX-1115-RT is the rack-mount unit we specify most often for AV racks — 15-amp input, eight protected outlets, integrated EMI/RFI filtering, and a clean rack-mount face that integrates into the equipment rack without calling attention to itself. For racks with higher draw, the 20-amp SurgeX SEQ series adds sequenced power-on so equipment boots in the correct order without inrush current spikes. For whole-rack or whole-theater protection at higher current ratings, the Defender series handles 20A to 50A circuits.

Installation is straightforward — the unit racks like any other piece of AV gear, equipment plugs in, and the input either plugs into a dedicated circuit or hardwires into the panel for the highest-current units. We typically install SurgeX downstream of a Torus toroidal isolation transformer when both are specified, layering the two protection technologies for absolute coverage. The result is a rack that has never lost a piece of equipment to a power event in any of our DFW installations.

The Questions People Actually Ask.

How is SurgeX different from a Furman or a Panamax surge protector?

Furman and Panamax use traditional MOV-based surge protection that diverts surges to ground and degrades over time. SurgeX uses patented series-mode technology that eliminates surges instead of diverting them, never degrades, and carries a lifetime equipment protection guarantee. SurgeX costs more — and is the protection chosen by broadcast facilities, hospitals, and government installations where equipment failure is unacceptable.

Do I still need SurgeX if I have a Torus transformer?

For most installations, the Torus transformer alone provides excellent surge isolation through its magnetic design. For reference theaters and irreplaceable installations, we layer SurgeX upstream of the Torus for absolute protection — series-mode surge elimination followed by toroidal isolation. The two technologies complement each other completely.

Will SurgeX protect against a direct lightning strike?

No surge protection of any kind can stop a direct lightning strike — that level of energy will damage anything in its path. SurgeX is engineered to eliminate the secondary surges that arrive on utility lines from nearby strikes, transformer faults, and switching events. Those are the events that actually damage residential AV equipment, and SurgeX handles them completely.

What does the lifetime equipment protection guarantee cover?

SurgeX will repair or replace any equipment connected to and damaged by a surge event that passes through a properly installed SurgeX unit. The guarantee covers the equipment, no deductible, no depreciation. The claim process is documented and supported by SurgeX directly. Across hundreds of DFW installations, we have never had to file one.
